O.E.C. at the O.C.C. December 5, 2010
Posted by Mark in : Union News , trackbackI recently attended the Onario Communications Council,(O.C.C.), held in Toronto on behalf of the O.E.C..
Their conference is a 3 day event. The first day, which I did not feel we needed to attend, was on H&S. The remaining two days were on Council business. Their conference has some similarities to ours as in they had the Regional VP’s speak, Keith McMillian spoke on behalf of the National on H&S. They also had their locals do reports and had extensive time set aside to develop plans of action to deal with problems that were common to the locals.
Bob Watts, their current President of the Council, announced his plans to NOT run for relection at the Councils next meeting in the spring.
The conference was attended by 3 out of the 4 newly merged locals from CTEA. They are going back to their respective memberships to discuss joining the O.C.C.. In anticipation of the locals joining, the O.C.C. voted to allow them to become members.
Over all it was beneficial to attend this Council. They have similar problems and concerns about their future as we do. I had the opportunity to speak at their confernce. I thanked them for the invitation to their Council. I took advantage of the podium and spoke on the merits of having these conferences. That I observed from their arbitrations report that they too were having similar battles with large coporations who believed their workers to be commodities as opposed to valuable assets! I also told them about our plans to have a shared confernce in the spring of 2011. I explained the benefits of working together towards common goals. I also took the time to thank the National for their continued support in not only our Council, but for their support towards all the Councils.
In Solidarity
