Dear Brothers and Sisters:

I recently attended the OPFC Conference in Dryden Ontario.

On June 2/09 in conjunction with the rally in Ottawa, we were able to shutdown the transcanada highway.

A peaceful protest on the Trans-Canada Highway in support of the forest industry has come to an end.
Some 40-members of the Communications, Energy and Paperworkers Union stopped traffic in Dryden for about 20-minutes Tuesday afternoon.  The demonstrators repeated calls for Federal support, stressing the Harper Government has done nothing for the forest sector.  They stressed that both levels of Government have spent billions of dollars to bail out the auto sector.  CEP is calling for similar support including loan guarantees and bankruptcy protection for wages, severance pay and pensions.  CEP Spokesperson Kim Ginter is also calling for a national summit to discuss the crisis as well as a Federally supported worker adjustment program.  The demonstrators stressed the Feds have abandoned the ailing sector and small communities. The members were attending a Conference in Dryden to discuss forestry related issues.

I believe we need to support the forest sector in what ever way they need help as a union we need to stand together and support our brothers and sisters.  In unity we will prevail.

In Solidarity,

Scott Tracze

President
